Freelancer website design A good freelance site turns work away

The measure of a freelancer's website is not how many enquiries it produces. It is how many of them are worth answering. That means saying what you do, who it is for and roughly what it costs, before anyone fills in a form.

One sentence that says what you do and who for

Almost every freelance website fails in the first line, not the layout. Creative problem solver helping brands tell their story could be anybody doing anything. The specific version reads as smaller and wins more work.

  • What you do In the words a client would use rather than your industry's.
  • Who it is for Narrowly enough that some people rule themselves out.
  • What it costs A starting figure or a range. Saying it will not scare off the right clients. It just saves everyone time.
  • How you work How long things take and what you need from them to start.
  • How to start In one step, without a discovery call standing in between.
  • What you do not do So the wrong people rule themselves out before they even ask.

Work you cannot show

Describe the brief, the constraint and the result without naming anyone. Show a process rather than an outcome. Or simply ask the client, since a surprising number say yes.

What actually proves you can do the work

A gallery of finished pieces is the obvious proof. These are the other kinds that matter just as much, especially when the best work is the least showable.

  • A named testimonial One real name and one real sentence outperforms five anonymous star ratings.
  • A process, not just a result Walking through how you work is proof in itself when you cannot show the finished piece.
  • Where you have written or spoken A guest post, a podcast appearance, a conference talk. Someone else saying it is stronger than you saying it about yourself.
  • A specific result, even a modest one Say cut turnaround by half, not improved efficiency. A specific number sounds true. A vague one does not.
  • Who you have worked with Named where you can, described where you cannot, but named is always stronger.
  • How long you have been doing this A plain number. It answers a question people are too polite to ask directly.

Between contracts and jobs

Some freelancers want a site that also works if they end up applying for a role. Worth deciding upfront, since it changes what the homepage leads with.
